Probiotics and Skin Care

October 31, 2015

Decades of research have demonstrated the value of probiotics for a host of health issues. But few know the benefits of probiotics in relation to skin health and appearance.

Here are just a few references on the subject:

For Acne:

“In 1961, a case report found that of 300 acne patients given a probiotic, 80% had clinical improvement. But the notion has captured a lot more attention lately. Recent studies conducted in Russia and Italy found that probiotics help acne patients heal better and faster. And one small 2010 study published in the journal Nutrition found that acne patients who consumed a Lactobacillus-fermented beverage for 12 weeks produced less sebum (oily secretions) and had fewer acne lesions.”

“What is the connection between your stomach/gut and your skin? The GI tract and skin are both organs of detoxification. We need a healthy microbiome in the gut to break down food, absorb nutrients, and eliminate toxins. When our gut flora is not healthy, and there are more bad bacteria than good bacteria, a lot of problems can arise – including chronic inflammation, which is a cause of acne and other skin problems. Some bad bacteria, fungus, and yeast can even cause inflammation in and of themselves. So, if you are looking to clear up your skin, you have to start with your gut.”

For Rosacea:

“In fact, skin prone to acne or rosacea has shown improvement with daily probiotic use, giving dermatologists reason to consider supplementing traditional acne therapy with a dose of this beneficial bacteria.”

In earlier times when we lived in a more natural environment, your skin would be covered in beneficial bacteria that come from the soil. But modern lifestyles and conventional personal care products, chlorinated showers and other factors deprive you of the vital probiotics on the skin. The result? Unfriendly bacteria and fungi can take over, causing or worsening acne, dermatitis or other skin conditions.

To support your skin we recommend the following:

  • Consume full-spectrum, natural, non-GMO probiotics such as Inner Garden or Rest Easy.
  • Remove toxins such as chlorine, chloramines, fluoride and chemicals from your drinking and bathing water.
  • Use probiotic personal care products.

A great tip for hair care, by the way, is to mix some of our Inner Garden probiotics into your shampoo when you wash your hair. Also, put some Inner Garden into a spray bottle and spray your scalp after you wash your hair. An excellent hair and scalp treatment.
